GenAI Adoption Is Growing, but Data Security Remains a Concern
Generative AI (Gen AI) is becoming a regular part of business operations. Employees are using AI tools to write content, analyze information, solve problems, and improve productivity.
But as AI usage grows, so does the risk of sensitive data being shared without proper protection.
AI Usage Is Increasing
According to Check Point’s August report, high-risk Gen AI prompts fell to their lowest level in several months. However, overall AI usage continued to rise.
The average enterprise user generated 106 prompts in August, compared with 95 in July and around 78 in June.
This shows that while some organizations may be improving their awareness and security controls, the growing use of AI is creating more opportunities for sensitive information to be entered into AI tools.
The Risk Is Still Widespread
The report found that:
86% of organizations regularly using Gen AI were affected by high-risk prompt activity.
Organizations used an average of seven different AI tools.
About 1 in every 43 prompts from enterprise networks posed a data exposure risk.
These numbers highlight an important issue: the risk is not only about using AI. It is also about how AI is being used and what information employees are sharing.
Why Data Visibility Matters
Organizations need to know:
What data employees are entering into AI tools
Where that data is being sent
Whether the information is stored or shared
Whether sensitive data is properly protected
Without this visibility, organizations may struggle to prevent accidental data exposure.
Which Industries Face Higher Exposure?
The report recorded the following high-risk Gen AI prompt exposure rates:
| Industry | Exposure Rate |
|---|---|
| Healthcare and Medical | 4% |
| Software | 3.6% |
| Business Services | 3.5% |
Healthcare and Medical recorded the highest rate among the industries mentioned.
Regional Comparison
Latin America recorded the highest regional exposure rate at 3.5%, compared with the global average of 2.3%.
This shows that Gen AI-related data exposure is not limited to one industry or region. It is a broader challenge for organizations adopting AI.
What Organizations Should Focus On
As Gen AI adoption continues to grow, organizations should focus on:
Creating clear rules for AI usage
Educating employees about sensitive data
Monitoring the use of AI tools
Improving data protection controls
Maintaining visibility over what information is shared
Key Takeaway
Gen AI is helping organizations work faster and more efficiently, but increased usage also creates new security challenges.
The goal is not to stop using AI. It is to use AI responsibly, with the right visibility, controls, and data protection in place.
