Many victims are shocked because they never shared an OTP, never clicked a suspicious link, and never installed any unknown app. Yet, money disappears from their bank account.

So how does this happen?

How the Scam Works

Imagine you've ordered something online and you're away from home. You need to contact the delivery executive, so you call the number shown in the app or sent via SMS.

Sometimes, scammers impersonating delivery personnel or posing as customer support may ask you to dial a number that begins with codes such as *21* or other call forwarding codes, claiming it is required to contact the delivery agent or verify your identity.

The moment you dial and execute the code, call forwarding may get activated on your phone.

As a result:

  • Incoming calls to your number may be forwarded to the scammer.

  • OTP verification calls from banks and other services can reach the fraudster instead of you.

  • The criminal may use these OTPs to authorize financial transactions or gain access to your accounts.

The victim often has no idea that call forwarding has been enabled.

  • Enable banking alerts and monitor your account for unusual activity.

  • If you suspect fraud, immediately contact your bank and your mobile service provider.
